Knitting Socks!

I have to say thank you to two people....Michelle Marr of Michelles Romantic Tangle blog and Judy Laquidara of Patchwork Times. Their enthusiasm and "can do" attitude for sock knitting helped me to finally start knitting socks. I mean real socks!

It's not as if I've not made socks before. One pair of worsted weight tube socks, then years later, one pair of regular socks but again with worsted weight yarn. But I struggled. Turning the heel, gussets, picking up stitches, none of it came easily.

At one point Michelle did blog posts with instructions on how she did socks. Thanks Michelle! And Judy was confident that we could learn anything we really wanted to from the Internet. I now have made two pairs of socks. Fingering weight yarn! The first two aren't perfect but certainly wearable. This brown yarn is my third pair and I'm already more relaxed than I was on the others, I've told myself that once I do a "perfect" pair of these simple stockinette socks I will allow myself to move on to a more complicated pattern. Hey! I'm looking forward to doing cables! You would not believe how many different ideas I have save on Pinterest! Wait! We are all quilters and knitters! I know we all overindulge on Pinterest dreams.

I love bloggers! P.S. I made no effort to have the stripes matched on the socks. I love them just the way they are!

Cheers!
Toni

  2. Congrats on such pretty socks and for sticking with it. The colors in this pair are wonderful. Yes, I agree with you about the guru of sock knitters who encourage us to learn. Judy was my mentor and it still took me a while, but now I don't want to do anything else, because it is so much fun and very satisfying to be able to wear your handknitted socks. I'm a top down sock knitter using 5 dpns and want to learn other methods.

    1. I too knit top down on 5 dpns. I've practiced toes for toe up socks with worsted weight, just to learn technique, and while I learned to knit when I was 12, now I'm 68, I was taught English style. Again, with worsted weight, I am practicing Continental and a modification to make it Flicker. I would like to knit a bit faster. I too want to try other methods. I have to admit to a bit of vanity...when you knit with five needles around none knitters everyone is soooo impressed. Knit on!
